Our customers’ sales growth outpaces the industry

Sales among the 500 largest restaurant chains in the United States rose 3.4 percent to $242 billion in 2011, compared with a 1.8-percent increase in annual sales in 2010, according to new research from Chicago-based Technomic.

Meanwhile, sales at the public restaurant companies that we have the privilege of calling customers increased approximately 20% last year. Correlation or causality? Even if this correlation was coincidental, isn’t it instructive to study what the highest performing companies do?

“For the first time, 100 percent of our national marketing efforts to kids will include nutrition or active-lifestyle messages, a significant move in our ongoing commitment to children’s wellbeing,” Neil Golden, chief marketing officer for McDonald’s USA, said in a statement on Monday. “We are proud of this new approach and believe it will help make nutrition fun for kids while helping families feel even better about the food choices they make when visiting McDonald’s.”

How you treat the weakest is how you treat me

Kindness shown to kids pleases parents and onlookers alike. Perhaps this sentiment comes from these biblical roots:

 

Matthew 25:31-40

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.

32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.

35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,

36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?

38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?

39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

New Characters Will Pitch Nutrition for Line Criticized for Role in Childhood Obesity

McDonald’s is putting its embattled Happy Meal front and center with a national TV campaign expected to launch next week, Ad Age has learned.According to people familiar with the matter, the campaign will feature new characters and focus on nutrition, which has historically been a sore point with those who charge that Happy Meals contributed to an increase in childhood obesity. The campaign, which will most likely run periodically through 2012, was created by Publicis Groupe’s Leo Burnett, Chicago.BloombergThe agency declined comment and referred calls to McDonald’s. A spokeswoman for McDonald’s did not provide details and said it was “premature to discuss a Happy Meals campaign.”The campaign is believed to be the first major TV push for Happy Meals since the chain began revamping the offering last fall with apple slices, fewer fries and a low-fat dairy option. The result is a 20% reduction in calories in what the chain calls its most popular Happy Meals.It appears to be a follow-up to a nutrition declaration the chain made around the time it unveiled the new kids’ meal.
